Was wondering if it would benifet me to run a eq in front of my vt50 or is this only good with a fx loop?

I run three one in the FX Loop(MOD) and on the front end one for soloing and the other for tone shaping.

Valvetronix.net - Technical Articles section (lots of good stuff in there!) http://www.valvetronix.net/forums/technical-articles-f51.html

Retrobob gives a substantial discount to members of the Valvetronix.net forum. You can either do your own mod, or buy a ready made kit that requires no soldering, & it gives lots of other extra facilities too.

I know that there has been EQ issues with the VT50 and Vt100

I do not see the need for a EQ with this amp. The one main issue is VT50' overwhelming bass response. Try getting a clear bass response from the low E and A string with bass at noon, not posible.

To make a long story short. I read a review wrtitten by a sound engineer about the VT50. He is spot on. Playing at band levels never have bass knob past 9 o'clock.

I remeber my first gig with the amp.. Think I had bass knob at noon. This was my first closed back amp, and the directional beam of sound and rumbling bass made me frustrated.

I have stored all the sounds with bass knob at 9 'o'clock ,, even lower for full on distorted and delayed lead sounds.

When the bass boom is gone ,, the treble and midrange EQ works better , and different amps models have very different midrange responses, so i garantee that you find one to you like.

Well, you've just justified the value of an EQ, but it must be in an FX loop, not direct, for best results. An EQ will allow you far greater tonal control than is possible from the onboard EQ only. By cutting the low end frequencies, and raising mids/higher frequencies, you will be able to get rid of the bass overpowering issue.

You might also try a BBE Sonic Stomp Maximiser - again best in an FX loop, but worth trying direct. Guitar speakers struggle with handling all the frequencies thrown at it at the same time. The BBESS works by splitting higher & lower frequencies in such a way that they reach the speaker at a fractionally different time. This allows the speaker to process frequencies more effectively. The result is a clearer, punchier, more dynamic and bigger tone.
