AC4TV Why 16Ohms?

Don't flame me for asking what might seem like a simple question. I know nothing about electricity or power and there is so much impractical explanations on the Net that I'm about to shoot myself. So, let me be very direct and speak only of the AC4TV.

What does 16 Ohms output to a single 16Ohm cabinet DO that (theoretically) a 8 Ohm output on an AC4TV to a 8 Ohm cabinet doesn't do?

No real difference between using an 8ohm speaker or a 16ohm speaker theoretically. The amp is simply matched to the speaker they have chosen which is extremely important for a valve amp.

It could have just as easily been a 8ohm load they selected, however Vox probably selected the 16ohm load so you would be able to use the external speaker out to run a Vox or most other 4x12's for example, thus giving you some extra options for speakers as most quads are a 16ohm load etc.

Does that help?

yeah, but lots of external cabinets, if not most are 8 ohms. I just got back from Guitar Center doing just this. . .trying to find a multi speaker cabinet to plug an AC4 into. There weren't any, not even in the bass section. .

I too don't understand the reasoning. .

There weren't any? You mean they didn't have any extension cabinets or didn't have any that were 16 ohm?

As long as the total impedance load doesn't drop below 4 ohms - provided the manufacturer of the amp doesn't say "do not connect less than xxx ohms", you should be fine with an 8 ohm extension cabinet.

Dont forget about power handling in watts.

I recommend NOT to connect the head on anything that's not 16ohm. There are a few other posts about the cab's impedance on this forum.

@simonnq - Yes, this definitely provides me with a logical view on why VOX might have chosen the 8ohm or 160hm. Thanks!

@lusthaben - Yea, I noticed that too. I got the 112TV cabinet since it compliments the AC4 (color, ohms, etc).

i wanted gig-able volume from the combo so i change to 8ohm speaker (don't use the attenuator) with a higher spl rating,
effecting changing doubling the power output from 4 to 8 watts,
i used Celestion G10 Vintage, amazing volume increase, i also change tube with a lesser gain preamp to tube 12AY7-EH (gold pin), amp doesn't even think about breakup with volume till after 3 o'clock, just what i wanted for use with my Telecaster

I think about to change from the stock speaker to a greenback in my AC4C1.

So can I use a 8Ohm speaker instead a 16Ohm speaker with no harm?

And the 8Ohm produces more Volume in that configuration??!?

hi alexrebach
you don't say why are you changing speaker?
the greenback has only a 95db rating so a less efficient speaker than i think the stock in there now so you'll most likely loose volume it that's your goal at 16ohm at 8ohm yes you'll have more power driving the speaker which might be equal to volume we have with stock, will it sound different of course if that's the tone you want.
have a look at Eminence Ramrod 100db rating which i know will fit the Redfang is 102db but i'm not sure if that will fit, remember every 3db is a perceived doubling of volume by our ears!

also remember that if you change to 8ohm it's best not to use the attenuator, doing so will make the tubes run very hot and burn out unless you change a few things on the board,

AFAIK the stock speaker offers 95dB or less. So equal to the greenback. The greenback sounds very nice though.

Do not forget we're talking about 10" speakers. Could it be that the speakers mentioned by You offer these 100/ 102dB as 12" versions?

Which one of the Celestion range is the stock speaker?
As I know the VX12 is the "Seventy 80" speaker. So what is the VX10?

hi
alexreibach

i have no idea what the spec's on the VX10 are, i suspect it would be hard to find that info anywhere.

all the info i gave you is for 10" not 12" speakers, hope that helps,

i'm slowly breaking in my Celestion G10 Vintage, it just gets better and better every day
nice tight and crisp everything you'd want im truly amazed how much difference
just a speaker change can make!
