I just recieved the amp today. It looks great and sounds even better. The clean channel has a little less headroom than i thought but it seems to be sufficent enough, and plugged into a 2x12 caband its fine. The distortion channel is where this baby really shines. On the OD1 setting if my favorite and sounds gritty and tubey.OD2 is great sounding for leadwork. The manual says that the tube is on the power amp side and to get more tube sound to crank the master and control the volume through the clean chanel volume. This proved true for me.Overall I believe Vox hit a home run with this amp .I was initally a bit worried about this amp sounding like the ad50vt i had but i have to say that this amp sounds nothing like that amp amn much much better.Tha ad50vt sounded terrible and very digital to my ears and not like a tube amp at all. This baby sounds like a tube amp to me.I only spent about an hour with my ac15vr but tomorrow when i have band rehersal ill really crank it.I will post another review following......
I already own two Vox VR 15 amps and keep one in the garage ready for jams and one in my teaching studio. Best sounding little amp I've ever owned and plugged into a 4 12 cab with Vintage 30's and you'll swear your running an old Marshall plexi! I was so hoping to find a VR30, but they are tough to find and our store started stocking the VT 30 last year. I bought the VT 30, but was soon bummed by the digital sound that can only be described as fizzy. Today I brought the amp in to sell and bought a Vox AC15 VR and dig this amp for club gigs and jamming. I did compare it next to an AC30 and thought there was considerable headroom with the 30, but the 15 just fell short by only a little bit. I thought hard and long about buying the 30, but it's size and weight shut that down. I lifted the 30 and changed my mind, but the size is still more than I want. The 15 seems just about right and I do hope it's friendly with FX pedels since there is no FX loop built in. I've not plugged it into my 4 12 yet, but I'm sure it will stand up and bark when called upon. The price was great, but getting it for cost was even better! The mid knob is missing on the 15 vs the 30 and that is too bad. Otherwise, the foot switch I got was from an older version and only changes the channel from clean to OD 1 or clean to OD 2 depending on which OD you have on at the time. The "B" switch turns the reverb on and off and I have no complaints short of wanting only another 10 watts and it's still pretty loud. Great job VOX!
you said you compared the AC15VR to an AC30. . .did you mean you compared it to an AC30VR? or a tube based AC30????
these new vr series amps have the visual appeal that the vt series lacked (ac30 vintage vibe). hopefully the new series will have better reliability than the old ones. if so, i see vox having hot items here. i might consider replacing some of my tube gear. (am currently into a project of restoring a royal guardsman to go with my orig. '67 super lynx deluxe/ v253 in red)
I, as well, just received my AC15VR and got to fire it up last night. Like Highwayman mentioned above, the OD1 channel is my favorite and you can really control it like an all tube amp by adjusting volumes both on the amp itself as well as rolling off the volume on your guitar. OD2 is not too shabby and I can see using it sometimes as well but I found that this amp takes pedals very well and liked the way it sounded with my Blackstar Dual pedal both boosted and distorted. The pushed clean channel with a little chorus and delay was definitely giving some U2 sounding tones and was fun to play around with. Cant wait to spend more time with it this weekend and mic it up to see how it records.
I'll let y'all know how the Weber speaker transplant goes. Based on experience, it will give more clean headroom as the stock Chinese Celestions distort at any level. Otherwise I really like this amp a lot.
I bought the AC15VR just few days ago!! I was playing with it this few days.... it's very easy to get a good sound, cause it's very easy to use and straight forward.... it sounds amazing!! but I have a question!! will it be louder if I plug into a 2 x 12 speaker or 4 x 12 speaker??
