DO YOU THINK THAT THESE THINGS SPOIL THE LOOK OF THESE AMPS, I HAVE THE CLASSIC MODEL AND IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS FANTASTIC, THE STANDARD WILL SOUND THE SAME, BUT THAT LOOK, I FEEL WILL PUT VOX FANS OFF.

I love the metal grill. Especially the Chrome. I don't like the standard brown grill unless it's on a cream tolexed amp. I like the blue diamond grill as well.

TO ME THE METAL GRILL MAKES THE AMPS LOOK LIKE A MODERN LAUNDRY BASKET, ALL VOX AMPS SHOULD CARRY THE CLASSIC LOOK.

Hi Paddy, great to have you on board and thank you for your contributions - but could I please make a humble request?

And it's that you only type in conventional lower case please?

Two reasons - first, its so much easier on the eyes for everyone to read. Second, its pretty much 'understood' on all forums worldwide as etiquette that writing in upper case caps is akin to 'shouting' on forums (which of course I realise was never intended! lol).

BTW, I'm not a great fan of the chrome grills myself, & like you I think Vox amps look best with a more classic look - but there are plenty of folk that do like them - all just personal taste of course.

North Coast Music in the US sell new Valvetronix with classic grills. You might like to check them out - I personally think they look fabulous, even though I don't think we have any dealer offering anything like that in the UK unfortunately (Click on the Vox amps pic and then go to ' New Vox Amps and Foot Controllers' ): -

There's also a number of folk on other forums (inc. Valvetronix.net) that have done their own conversions, and some are really cool! Here's an example: -

...and if you fancy changing the chrome grill to cloth yourself, one of the guys on Valvetronix.net even posted a step by step guide: -

i agree with voxman that all is about the personal taste,i like the grill but the look of the ac30 is what made vox a name besides of the quality an remember that the valvetronix series is a quality amp modelling an they try to give them a modern look

personal taste counts for a lot, but in a world where everybody is trying to come up with something new, is a place i don't want to go to, give me the good old days, give me something that stays the same, sick and stand by the original passion that made the vox the greatest tone machine and classy amp in the world and it does not involve catering for shredding metal grill loving niose polluters, i thank you.

Ha - I know a 'shredder' that absolutely loves his Vox stack... basically it looks like a Marshall tower in disguise :-)
But I agree: the chrome grill isn't my thing either. Vox have tried different things over the years (remember those '80s amps, promoted by... was it Johnny Marr? Ugh!), but they always seem to return to what made them the coolest looking amps ever.
Yes, the sound is more important, but we agree on that side of things I guess.

The metal look leaves me cold to say the least. I must concede that scince I bought my
DA5 to be a battery powered portable amp, with some great tones, the metal face plate is probably the sturdiest way to go for those of us who plan to do some outdoor busking with other musicians. I love the classic Vox look, but I have nasty visions of torn grille cloth
covering, happening faster than you can say ' corner edge of picnic table '.

My personal opinion is I don't like the metal grill. Frankly I find myself fighting the urge to rub a block of cheddar across the front of them.
I can appreciate that some do like it though. Things would be pretty boring if all had the same taste in amps, guitars and tone. The important thing is that you use it and have fun.

Cheers,

I am not a big fan of the metal grill... its just...not... Vox. I am not saying it looks bad, but it really has deterred me from purchasing one till I found North Coast Music and paid the upcharge for the classic look. I would also love to see Vox bring back the chrome stands!

I was a local music store and played an ac30... Must say with a happy warm fuzzy feeling, "I love that amp tone." At the same time that look needs to stay on that amp. It what makes vox Vox. Valvetronix is a different series of Vox. It needs the metal. It kind of gives that series it's own charm. By the way ya'll need to try the VT's!

Like I love vox gear but I would have never purchased any if it wasn't for the modern look. As cool as that ac30 is I would have never played an ac30 if it wasn't for the chrome grill first. And that's why Vox put it there. For chaps like me. Personal I don't like gold on anything. If the original ac30 came with chrome accents instead of gold I would have got one a long time ago.

I think it would be cool to have an all tube valvetronix... but that :( then would be a different beast... or would it!? :D

What about dust getting on speaker with the stock grill. I found a black-silver-turquise grill cloth that might look good with black cab.And will keep dust out.

After thinking about my last post, might just put a nice grill cloth behind the grill to keep dust out.

Definitely, definitely, definitely DON'T like the chrome grill look. When the Valvetronix series was first introduced, it was with a lovely blue diamond speaker cloth. I always thought that Vox had the classiest looking amps. I suspect that the reason for the switch was that the metal grill is less expensive to produce and manufacture. I may be wrong. If the reason was to look more "modern", I feel it was a mistake. Then again, I'm a old geezer and resistive to change, but for pete's sake, guys, they're Vox. Y'know, the amps behind The Beatles?

For the metal "noise polluters", I love the look of the all black VT-XL. It fits just perfect with the style that I play and the look I was going for. The classic Vox look fits with those who want to sound like The Beattles.
