Vox AC30CC2X Cutting Out

Hello all,
I have a Vox AC30CC that I just bought. It is used. It is a 2006. I have only had it for 3 days and it just started cutting out some. It happened after playing for about 20 minutes. I opened it up and wiggled all the tubes to make sure nothing was loose. While looking around, I saw that the top of the EL34s were a little brown on top. They are Electro Harmonix and the pre's are Sovteks.

I do not know a whole lot as I have never had an amp with problems (gladly).

Also, I noticed on the bottom of the tube sockets are a little brown or rusted looking. Nothing bad at all though.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Do I just need to replace some tubes? And if so, which ones?

Or do you think it is a speaker connection? And when you say they sometimes have bad connections you mean the soldering right onto the actual speakers, correct?

Thank you soooooo much!

If you have picked up the amp second hand the first thing I would do is a complete re-tube. You have no idea how old those existing tubes are. I suggest JJ's. Your amp has a compliment of 4 EL84's , 3 12AX7's and 1 GZ34 rectifier. I would replace them all. then see how the amp sounds etc...

Hi,
re-tubing is a good idea... you shouldn't have el34's...I hope that the bias has not been changed......

Oh I don't know why I typed EL34, they are EL84! Just a Typing error. But that is probably it? I know that changing tubes is the go-to answer, but no other issues potentially that are as likely?

i have the exact experience with my recently purchased, used, AC30CC2X. The volume seems to drop for no apparent reason and then comes back eventually. I read another blog that said to not use the standby switch and to allways leave this switch in the on position. I tried this 2) weeks ago and have not had a problem since

paulc00 has leaving your amp standby switch in the "on" position still prevented your amp from its issue with a volume drop/cut out??
My VOX that I recently bought used has been doing the same thing. I regularly use the Standby switch.

If your amp is a CC model that uses a Tube Rectifier......DO NOT use the SB Switch. Leave it in the Off Position and never touch it again.
No amp "needs" a stand by switch. But the SB in the CC models can/do/will spike the tube diodes so hard, that it causes them to fail.
Good Luck

Don't you mean "leave it in the On position"? ;-)

No, I mean Off.
If the Stand By is On, the amp will not play.
