Ok, I just did my little self-imposed homework assignment and I can report that you can indeed get a fine overdriven bluesy SRV-ish tone with no external pedal on the VT30. YMMV on the VT50, but it shouldn't be too different.
I was able to get that sound using the Tweed 4x10, Super 4x10, and AC30TB by jacking up the Gain to taste. Adding some compression, using the Comp/Chorus setting and then turning the Chorus effect off, helped. The instructions on how to do that are in the manual.
Tweed 4x10 is a quieter model, so the gain needs to be cranked higher to get that effect than on the other 2.

I find the most satisfying bluesy clean tones with Super 4x10, AC30TB, Tweed 4x10, and Boutique Clean. You can either set the gain at the point just before it gets dirty and then add dirt with the pedal, or you can set the gain so it is a little dirty and then have the pedal add more.
And you can add compression and/or chorus as SRV has some of that, too, on some tunes. You can also try rotary instead of chorus.

I'll try this out tomorrow when I have the house to myself, but I believe you can get a reasonable facsimile of that tone by turning up the gain on either of the 2 4x10 models and possibly also adding some compression. I'll try it out and report back.

Sorry, but you need a tubescreamer for SRV tone - without this it can't be done. Although the new VT+ range has a pedal section, with tube OD that models an Ibanez TS808 tubescreamer, the VT doesn't.

Otherwise, Fender Bassman or possibly a cranked Fender Blackface model is the nearest you can get.
