True story.. Recently I had the priviledge to pick up an AC15C1 amp and I enjoyed playing it but found when I recorded with it it doesn't compare to my AC4TV V112 cab. I was told by keeping the master volume low I could indeed get it to replace my AC4TV and cab and use it in my condo..

In essence that didn't work. I found to get a minimum good quality sound out of the amp I had to still push the tubes and speaker to some degree and that was detrimental to my recordings since they use overdrive, distorition and delay.

It just did't mix well with my backing tracks.. Also it didn't cut through well enough.

the Ac15c1 is a great gigging amp and if I ever play in a band one day which I probably won't I may need one, but I ended up returning it and going back to my amazing ac4tv and v112 cab.

I found for recording even the ac4tv on 4 watts was too loud in my condo.. It does best at 1/4 watt with 1 watt at times. Otherwise the guitar overwhelms my backing tracks and when I turn up the volume its madness.

I would also like to comment on just the ac4tv. When I first purchased my amp I didn't have the 12 inch cab so i found it rattling and also making too much noise and hum. After getting the cab these problems went away. I also found the cab to add more bass and volume to the ac4tv and work well at 4 watts whereas the chassis for the ac4tv doesn't seem to be able to handle 4 watts at high volume .

It is my current view that the ac4tc and v112 cab are hands down the best for recording and even playing with other musicians and its capable of 4 watts. However if you want to gig perhaps the ac15 is a better choice.

The best lead tone comes from the combo, in my opinion. I'm surprised how little sustain there is from the ac15. Did you record all 3 at approximately the same volume(db)?

Why not buy a Zoom H2 Portable hand recorder. It records in stereo and surround sound too.

Not to mention its easy to record anything not just guitar performances. many Professionals use it for live recording.

Its decently priced at around $200. I'm picking one up myself.

I also have an AC4TV and recently puchased a V112 12" cab. I feed the AC4TV into the V112 cab. So I have the best of both worlds: a portable amp to take anywhere with 10" speaker and good for those cutting leads, and the basser, fuller, larger than life, v112 12" cab. Also with the cab you can output the fuller sound to a PA system if doing a gig in a concert hall.

Sounds fab!

1/4 watt is the lowest volume and its not that loud. I crank mine up to max and I live in a condo too. With pedals it gets very loud, but straight with no pedals on I can crank it up without disturbing the neighbours!! Either that or they hear me and like the music :)

Good luck
Adrian

@mansh - I used Shure SM58 directly pointing to the edge of the inner speaker cone, right up on the fabric. The amp was off the ground, not on my carpet, but on a chair. I turned the AC4 up fairly loud to get that overdrive sound... it was loud enough that I had to get my wife's approval first. :)

Normally I use a condenser for typical recordings because then I don't have to have it too loud. But in this case because I really wanted to get the overdrive on the AC4 to overwhelm the microphone, I turned the amp up loud.

I hope that helps!
Cheers,
Andy

Hi - these sound great. As a new AC4 owner, I've been trying to record my AC4 and have been getting really frustrated. Please can I ask what mic you used, how far from the amp it was, and where the mic was pointing. I'm really struggling. I've tried an SM57 and it sounds so thin. I've used a condenser and it sounds better, but I'm obviously getting a lot of my room as well. Thanks!

@bmgstammer - I didn't mod the AC15CC1. It's the original stuff when I bought it.

@caramellokoala - Thanks! Yea, that AC4 is great for leads... I get compliments when I take it our for jams. I'm not sure about switching out the speakers. I'm not one for making changes because I'm not good at that type of stuff. Yea, the recordings are the best I can do sitting in my basement. :) But, of course, the best thing about the recordings is comparing the tonal quality. And I agree, they all have their own characteristics. I can see why you'd prefer the +cab.

Nice, thanks for that.. good playing by the way! I have the AC15CC and the AC4 Combo, and I love both of them equally, the AC4TV has a nice tight/compressed punch, perfect for leads, while the AC15CC (with the alnico blue) has a much smoother and more articulate tone in my opinion. I don't think those samples truly do any of the amps much justice to be honest! But my ears are telling me the AC4 Cabinet sounds the best! I think I'm going to hook mine up to a cab!! Do you think the AC4 would sound better with greenbacks? Or keep it stock?

@stickler64 - Yea I really do like jamming on the combo for leads It cuts through mixes and live stuff.

@jamman798 Thanks, the cabinet was essential for me to be able to keep up with our practice band. An EQ on the AC4 + Cabinet really helps take advantage of the range of the speaker. Of course, I didn't use one for this.

I wish I had the 8" and the (new) 6.5" mini for the sake of comparison.

Wow, that was cool. Can't believe that I preferred the combo over all. But, not by much. Like Rich said, they're all tasty in different ways. The combo seems to have just a bit more bite and snarl in comparison. Thanks for doing that, Andrew. Those lead tones are fantastic.

Got them all right, but interesting test! Having played a loan AC4 for a while, & as I mentioned in another post comparing NT & AC4 just now, the NT (ditto the AC15) are more 'open' sounding with a fuller tone. The AC4 is slightly more 'nasal' (best word i can think of) by comparison. And as I've mentioned before, the 10" is much toppier & more 'vintage' sounding as compared to the bassier/fuller 12" cab.

As you rightly say all good, but different.
