hi
alexreibach

i have no idea what the spec's on the VX10 are, i suspect it would be hard to find that info anywhere.

all the info i gave you is for 10" not 12" speakers, hope that helps,

i'm slowly breaking in my Celestion G10 Vintage, it just gets better and better every day
nice tight and crisp everything you'd want im truly amazed how much difference
just a speaker change can make!

AFAIK the stock speaker offers 95dB or less. So equal to the greenback. The greenback sounds very nice though.

Do not forget we're talking about 10" speakers. Could it be that the speakers mentioned by You offer these 100/ 102dB as 12" versions?

Which one of the Celestion range is the stock speaker?
As I know the VX12 is the "Seventy 80" speaker. So what is the VX10?

hi alexrebach
you don't say why are you changing speaker?
the greenback has only a 95db rating so a less efficient speaker than i think the stock in there now so you'll most likely loose volume it that's your goal at 16ohm at 8ohm yes you'll have more power driving the speaker which might be equal to volume we have with stock, will it sound different of course if that's the tone you want.
have a look at Eminence Ramrod 100db rating which i know will fit the Redfang is 102db but i'm not sure if that will fit, remember every 3db is a perceived doubling of volume by our ears!

also remember that if you change to 8ohm it's best not to use the attenuator, doing so will make the tubes run very hot and burn out unless you change a few things on the board,

I think about to change from the stock speaker to a greenback in my AC4C1.

So can I use a 8Ohm speaker instead a 16Ohm speaker with no harm?

And the 8Ohm produces more Volume in that configuration??!?

i wanted gig-able volume from the combo so i change to 8ohm speaker (don't use the attenuator) with a higher spl rating,
effecting changing doubling the power output from 4 to 8 watts,
i used Celestion G10 Vintage, amazing volume increase, i also change tube with a lesser gain preamp to tube 12AY7-EH (gold pin), amp doesn't even think about breakup with volume till after 3 o'clock, just what i wanted for use with my Telecaster

Yes & yes - especially if you're using a 2x12" or 4x12" cab. Only caveat is re clean headroom - it begins to break up reasonably early, so whilst it has the volume you won't be able to get pristine cleans at higher volumes.

I did a couple of demo vids for the NT15 - one 'straight', one with basic effects with the TLST (no amp modeling) :

I just received my VT30 today and just for kicks I ran a cord from the headphone jack to my old Peavey Twin 12 in front of the amp and it sounded awesome with more volume than I`ll ever need. It has 130w. I also have the ability to EQ it better. I also am thinking of installing a external speaker jack to run a 412 cab. If anyone does this please post how it worked out.

your other guitarist is a bit silly to get an amp THAT powerful, he should have got a VT30!

I don't think he's silly at all - a 100w amp is pretty standard for gigging; it's not so much about the volume, but the amps headroom and ease of coping at the same volume where a smaller amp (eg VT30) might be straining. 100w is only about 3db louder than a 50w amp (through the same speakers) so it's certainly not excessive.

Thanks for the replies Andrew and Blacksun - I've been out of commission with Ross River Fever, and I apologise for not checking back earlier. We've just got our hands on a good 1000W PA, and tried DI-ing our guitar amps and v-drums - it was a bit of a dodgy solution. So, I'm back to the VT30 miked. We did a gig just after the earlier post, and the sound guy actually asked me to turn the VT30 DOWN! I was impressed :) Think I'll look at a separate cabinet and see how that goes.

I installed a 70 watt Fender speaker in my AD30. Use FUNKED. Set dials at 3 o'clock, or higher. Use a TS9. Vox amps sound great when turned up. It's all 8 ohms. YOU WILL HAVE VOLUME. Channel one is set to less gain than channel 2.

I do agree with Andrew, and just would add that using the headphones socket you won't need a DI box.

Maybe use an as-short-as-possible 3.5 male/6.35 female cable with knots to starken it on the amp, and then a standard 6.35 male/male cable to the PA, wich cable can be easily unplugged in case of bad operation (like walking through the 6.35 cable).

If you have to use often your amp in that way, and that it's no more under warranty, what about adding a speaker-out socket on the amp?

So you could use the DI box and a standard jack, and could have the benefits of the valve reactor circuit of your amp (that should not be the case using the headphones output).

(note: this soulution should be done or checked by a qualified technician).

But the best soultion is ... to mike the amp.

@jibuma, The only thing that would make me nervous is the small jack being yanked on and breaking or getting loosened. So, tie a double-knot around the handle of the cable that you're plugging into the headphone jack and out into the PA. This way, if there is any tugging, it won't be on the headphone jack. I do this with all my amps so that if they get jerked, tugged or whatever, the force is applied to the handle, not the jack.

I HATE that the VTs have an 1/8" headphone jack.

All in all, I think this would work fine if you get the output volume matched to zero decibals on the mixing board/PA.

I'm wondering about using the headphone socket on my VT30 as a line out to the PA (via a DI box). Is there any problem with this? I'd rather not make any mods to the amp if possible.

No. I mean make a hole, put in a jack socket and rewire the inside so you can send the signal to an external whatever. I did this years ago with a little Boss 10 watt practice amp and it worked ok. I just wondered if anybody from VOX had any thoughts
