Yeah, I wouldn't advise using batteries on an ongoing basis - just for the sake of this test.

Today would have been my mom's birthday. She passed away from cancer in 2008, so I'm with you and hope your wife sends that cancer to the depts of hades where it belongs.

The Voodoo labs pedal power 2 plus is actually on my "wish list". Aside from the isolation it has a "sag" feature which mimics dying batteries which is said to give unique tonal qualities to overdrive pedals and that puppy will power my behemoth Line 6 M13. You won't go wrong with it.

About the batteries; good idea. My concern would be that some pedals suck the juice if you have something plugged into it. I have a fairly substantial board (more equipment than talent...) and plugging and unplugging everything seems just unpleasant.

Make sure you get good quality alkaline batteries.

Wait til you're finished your diagnostic tests and have a clear picture of what's causing the noise, have your conversation with Bob Weil, then, if necessary, consider the more expensive power supply options.

And there are other brands of high powered wall warts besides OneSpot. You could research that and then Google to see if there are noise complaints about them. That's how I found those 2 links I posted. I just Googled OneSpot noise.

I'm actually using a big fat Casio wall wart that came with an LCD tv. It puts out 750 mA, so there's enough juice to power my pedals, with no noise that I'm aware of. I think I found it at a yard sale. Before that, I was using a couple of Ibanez power supplies which were also quiet, but probably a little underpowered. The old style Boss PSA power supplies were very good, but the newer replacements have had problems, according to what I've read.

In any case, some wall warts are noisy, some aren't.

Thanks - we've known each other since 8th Grade (I'm going to be 42 this year) and my wife is special. We've lost 4 babies in a 5 years span (first one was Christmas Day 2004, last one was December 2009 - and they were all around the 12th week of the pregnancy) and I thought those were tough losses (and they were). I did write a song called "Empty Arms" and it's helped a lot of couples who have gone through miscarriages. Yet the cancer thing is a whole other ball game. We'll get through this. We do have one child and we call her our miracle baby - she came along 7 years before the first loss (and we were going to wait several years to have kids!! LOL!!)

About the pedals, yeah, I know - I can get a real good "tubescreamer" sound with combining some of those together - rarely do I turn them all on together at once. One thing that I haven't done was put 9v batteries in them - I have always run them off the OneSpot. One thing I am thinking about is selling the Open Road but I'm not 100% sure. If I do, I'd like to replace it with a good phaser pedal. I do have one of their H2O pedals and a metal case for sale but no one is biting here locally on Craiglist. I like the chorus sounds but I have that DTD and if need be, I can shut off the pedals and use the sounds on the VT100.

Now that I'm digging in the recesses of my mind, I had a solid-state Kustom Quad 100DFX 2x12 and I'd get hiss with the pedals and the OneSpot so I'm thinking that it's the OneSpot. I remember testing out the Angry Fuzz when I first got it and I only had a 9v and I don't remember it hissing.

However I'm going to go to the local grocery store because they are having a sale on batteries and get a bunch of 9v. These pedals really drain 9v something fierce! :-)

If the 9v work and I don't get any hiss - I will contact Bob Weil and let him know. I'll let you know what's going on too. Any thoughts on echoraven's input on the Voodoo Lab power supply or is it best to wait to see what my power problem is - pedal vs OneSpot - to answer?

I think that Jekyll & Hyde has a noise gate on it - I'll have to check.

Thanks again.

That AD100VT motor boat sound - I was asking for someone else and I never heard back from them so I never pursued it further.

Tomorrow (which is today right now - Thursday, March 28th) is my "Friday" since I have off then - can't wait for the long weekend. Have a great night and I'll update you soon.

Got tears in my eyes from reading your last paragraph. Your wife is blessed to have you.

Wow, 3 different ODs and 2 different distortions. Do they all sound different enough to justify their existence?

To troubleshoot the One Spot, remove it from the equation. Put fresh batteries in your pedals and try them out. If the hiss is gone, it was the One Spot. If the hiss is still there, it's one or more of the pedals, which you can then try individually, to see if they all hiss, or just some, or just one. Or it might be a combination that don't work well together.

Whatever you discover, it will involve a Visual Sound product, so I'd then get back to Bob Weil and find out what he can suggest or do for you. With all that stuff you should be a beloved and valued customer.

And if you like the VT100, keep it. I love my VT30.

BTW, what happened with your AD100VT that was making a motor boat sound?

cosmicrepairdude - thanks for the encouragement.

I went back through my answers and I'm such a turd! LOL! Sorry for the ambiguity - that's what I get for answering very early in the morning with little to no sleep. :-)

I just went downstairs to run the amp through all the "tests" again and yes, when I just plug my guitar into the amp directly, zero noise.

When I plus my Visual Sound pedals in there (I love the pedals, but I guess it's the OneSpot - thanks for the links by the way!)

I put the pedal set-up in the incorrect order above, here's how I've been setting it up and it came at the recommendation of the owner of VS, Bob Weil:

Guitar plugged into Route 66, Angry Fuzz, Jekyll & Hyde, Open Road, Visual Volume, Dual Tap Delay then plug this into the amp.

I've been playing for a little over a 4 years but most of it has been acoustic and it's just been under a year that I've been playing electric and I'm still new at the pedals. I had a RP500 and it was too much for me so I went to pedals instead.

I'm still waiting for echoraven's suggestion on the Voodoo Lab - I'm thinking they were suggesting the Pedal Power 2 Plus . I'm thinking this will help with my noise problem on this amp?

I have some guy that wants to trade me for a crate halfstack w/ crate head or a marshall valvestate & custom cab w 4x12 eminence speakers for my vt100 however I really don't want to part with this. If I do I really want to stay with Vox however I want to sort out this noise issue before I entertain trades/sales.

I got this VT100 for a great buy.

Thanks again for all your help and input, this really means a lot to this "old man"

My wife came through surgery really well today and is resting now thanks to pain medicine. We got the genetic test results back and have to get the biopsy results back on April 2nd (her follow-up visit) to find out if she needs chemo or not. When they got in there the tumor was double the size of what the images showed - she's a fighter yet I hate seeing my wife of almost 18 years having to endure 2 partial mastectomy's in 3 weeks. So when I can, I'm turing to playing music and songwriting to get my feelings out. All of you on this thread have been a great help to me with this amp thing. Be blessed and let me know your thoughts on all this.

Best wishes to you and your wife.

It sounds like you indirectly answered my last question, but I want to make sure.
If you plug your guitar directly into the amp, no pedals at all, is the noise gone?
If so, the amp is not the issue, the problem is the pedal set-up, which includes the various cables, the One Spot, and the pedals themselves.
Read both pages of this for interesting discussion on this:
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/anyone-have-noise-one-spot-564712/index2.html
and this:
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/one-spot-noisy-475517/

If, in fact, your noise problem exists with only guitar plugged directly into the amp, then I'll have a couple of other questions and suggestions.

I'll clean out the inputs again even though I did go through everything when I got it.

echoraven - I looked at the voodoo labs site - is the one you're talking about the Pedal Power 2 Plus? The others don't seem to fit what I'd need. Thanks for your help on this. I really thought the OneSpot would help but maybe it isn't right now.

Part of your problem may be the one-spot. One thing on my wish list is a voodoo labs power supply, it will give you sweet, clean power.

In my opinion the best Valvetronix amps were the earlier ones, the ADxxVT series. The early chrome ones had cold solder problems but those have been weeded out by now. . .no extraneous noise. There is the problem of the dirty inputs which need to be cleaned every now and then.

I like the amp models on these amps very much! In my reading of Vox amps in different forums, I haven't hardly read of problems in the VR series. . .they seem to be quite popular but they don't have a lot of clean headroom, so you have to play at a lower volume if you want to stay clean.

All the best to you and your wife! best luck with the treatment plan.

Hi cosmirepairdude, I'll answer your questions as best I can in the order you asked them and wait for your response:

1. I tried all of the amp models and I seemed to get the same white noise.
2. Treble, Mid & Bass were not higher than Noon (I experimented with them in different positions) - Gain wasn't very high because of the pedals I'm using (all from Visual Sound - Jekyl & Hyde, Route 66, Angry Fuzz, their Volume Pedal, Open Road Overdrive, and Dual Tap Delay - all plugged into a OneSpot.
3. Master Volume was between 9 & 10am and the Power Level wasn't that high at all - between 8 & 9am (I live in a townhouse and trying to be respectful to the neighbors).
4. I like to play blues and rock and play some Drop Tuning (but not a lot) but like to experiment with different tones/sounds but would like to do so with getting a crisp sound out of the amp and I guess when I asked it, it was coming from the frustration of having the noise - do I need to get some type of noise gate or a direct box that will help cut that down? I'm not turing all those pedals on all at once either.
5. To be honest I'm not trying to emulate any type of amp sound - I just wanted to be able to maybe just find one model I could stick with and I guess it'll just take time to figure out what works best with what I have. That's why I asked in my initial post - maybe I need to get something like the AC30VR because it doesn't have all of these amp models on it and I can just plug in the pedals and go from there.
6. Direct mount humbuckers, split-coil tap on a Michael Kelly Patriot Custom; one volume/one tone control.
7. There is a some noise when I turn the amp on however I did notice it more with one of the pedals over the others - the Angry Fuzz. It's an octave fuzz and it seems that one, when I turn it on, adds to the hiss - like it is adding more "juice" to the signal. To be honest, there is some hissing between notes but it isn't a lot.
8. The hiss is there when the pedals are in the signal path. I have my guitar plugged into the first pedal listed above and then out to the amp from the last pedal.

Hope this helps.

echoraven - the cords are just a little over one year old and they are about "midline" - if I can afford a better set of cables like Armor Gold - I can see how much they make a difference.

Thanks again in advance for all your help. It is much appreciated. If I don't reply right away, it is because my wife is going in for her 2nd surgery for breast cancer (it is her 2nd surgery in 3 weeks this month). It has been rough going however being stressed & tired may be playing into all of this. Part of me just wants to sell it to go to the AC30VR however I got such a great deal on this pristine amp, it was too hard not to pass up.

What amp model do you have it set to?
What is the Treble set to? Mid and Bass, too.
What are the Master Volume and Power Level set to?
What kind of sound are you trying to get with your pedals off?
What amp sound are you trying to emulate?
Humbuckers or single coils?
Is it hiss that you hear when you're not playing, or between notes, that you're talking about?
Or is it quiet between notes and only hissy while the notes are sounding?

I have Bypass & Manual Mode "lit up" and I'm having a hard time with 1) "white noise" reduction (I did follow the instructions on holding the Tap button down while turning the Edit knob to adjust it and 2) getting a solid sound combo w/ my different pedals.

iirc the headphone socket is pretty fragile and sometimes the connections to the circuit board can crack. If it's anything like the VT30 (which it probably isn't) it's a relatively easy job to get at the bits and have a careful look, or even resolder the pins. The guitar input is soldered directly to a mini circuit board so that could be a source of problems too.

Otherwise, yes, keep spraying and cleaning, you may have dislodged some crud that is now in the way. But once cleaned and working again, do a preventative spray every couple of months, then it shouldn't reoccur.
