Anyone have info on repairing the expression pedal on a TLSE? The issue is with the way the pedal is connected to the mechanism that controls the pot. They have a pressed or stamped pin that connects the pedal at that point instead of a screw and I don't see anyway to repair it once it comes loose. The pedal works, but unless you are manually using it, it rests in the full, down position and won't stay up or in any in-between setting.

I've had my VT15 for two years now and I love it to death. Recently, after cranking her up, the amp developed a consistant hum. It gets louder with the volume and whenever I pick. Could this be caused by a blown speaker? An old tube? Something else? It makes the amp really fizzy and gross. Please help me revive it, as I absolutely love the tone i get out of this tiny amp!

Hi,

I have the Big Ben overdrive, and I need to replace the Gain pot, which is broken. It turns freely around (many rounds) and sometimes adjusts the gain, sometimes not. I guess the shaft is loose from the internal parts.

The pot says B500K and looks like this: http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r586/tklaavo/VOX_pot.jpg
So it's a linear pot, 500 kilo ohms.

I have no idea how this kind of pot is called and where should I look for one. I'm in Finland, local VOX dealers aren't too knowledgeable.. it's a discontinued product anyway.

Does VOX have spare parts for discontinued products?

Hi...
For two years now i own a cambridge 30r twin.. i have solved the opto problem but still the amp has some issues..
If i play for over an hour as you know the volume goes down and the tone gets worse..
I need to know what adjustments i have to do and more importantly what things i need to buy to improve the amp...

Ι know that these have been answered in other topics but i think it is better to have them all in one...

Hello all,
Someone brought me a rather messed-up Vox AC30 for repair; the bottom left of the circuit board says "AC30 revision 2 1987", so I guess that is the actual model number. The amp is producing sound, but it's muddy and weak; the reverb hardly does anything audible at all. Preamp tube anode voltages are far too low, and the main problem is clearly located in the supply (see picture here):
1 - Two burnt resistors (390R?) have been removed.
2 - The bottom three supply capacitors carry a normal HV voltage (some 340 volts); the top one only shows 140 volts.
3 - A 1K/5W resistor was added between the V+ of the third capacitor and an orange wire connector.
4 - The left half of the Standby switch has only one (green) wire connected. Where should the other switch contact go?
Then there's one more issue about the reverb (picture here):
5 - The top of the reverb transformer appears to be connected directly to a supply voltage.

I have a simple question: can someone point me to a schematic diagram for this particular AC30? I found several AC30 schematics already, but none of those precisely match the actual amp circuit here.
Of course, repair tips with regard to the numbered issues are appreciated as well, in particular the one about the standby switch with the missing wire (#4).
To prevent any needless warnings: I'm a qualified repair technician with 35+ years of experience, including high-voltage applications. I know what I'm doing, and I always handle high voltages with the utmost caution and concentration.

Thanks a lot in advance,

what i could see now though was that about 14 seconds in as they warmed up on standby, the bottom of the rectifier tube started arcing inside and looked like it was shorting. the fuse blew,

Any tube arching inside is never a good thing, replace the tube.

I wish this forum allowed editing....
BTW, I would start this with a new rectifier tube.
The whole point is to identify a bad tube(s) at each step.
If a fuse snaps after tube insertion, you know there is a tube problem.
From your description, I would just start with a fresh recto. Power tubes are "probably;y" good, but you always need spares.
If you have doubts about the power tubes, it may be a good idea to just go ahead and insert them one at a time as well.
Best

The Sovtek is not any less reliable than any other modern day GZ34.
Do you use the Stand By Switch.?
If you do, you need to discontinue. The SB Switch causes BIG problems with the CC models.
I would suggest you check all of your fuses with a Meter, or just replace them all. You need to KNOW the fuses are good.
Make sure the SB Switch is in the PLAY position. Power up the amp with NO rectifier tube and NO power tubes. If the amp stays Power On, turn off the power OFF (leave the SB where it is) and insert the rectifier tube. Turn the power back ON. If the Power and Stand By stay lit, turn OFF the power (leave the SB where it is). Insert the power tubes
and turn the power back ON.
You should have "normal" operation.

Hi vox community! i am having a bit of an issue with my custom classic 2...
this is my first post on these forums! i figured no one would no better than you fine folks.
quick overview of my situation:
i have owned and played this Vox for the greater part of a year with no issues...
please note that i literally am learning as i go here, i have virtually no knowledge of the workings of amplifiers or even electronics. i hope i didnt do anything to further damage my amp, i did much research prior. that said, i went to play the other day and heard a quick buzz through the speakers before hearing a short and the fuse popping. the power to the amp died, and when i checked, sure enough, the fuse had blown. in my effort to find what was happening, i blew a few more. ( the fuses are correct) i finally pulled the chassis from the cab and took a look at the tubes, there was no visible damage. i powered up the tubes with a new fuse and they started glowing. what i could see now though was that about 14 seconds in as they warmed up on standby, the bottom of the rectifier tube started arcing inside and looked like it was shorting. the fuse blew, and i was back where i started. ( is troubleshooting this way a horrible idea? :P)

is this a bad rectifier tube? it is a Sovtek and my research shows them to be unreliable. if i buy a new tube and install it, will this remedy the issue? or are there other diagnosis to rule out? what do you, the experts, recommend as a next step? thanks so much for your patience and experience in advance.

You guys are awesome thanks for the help.

Bill is spot on re dirty/sticking jack sckets. See here:

http://www.valvetronix.net/forums/maintenance-tips-on-valvetronix-amps-t141.html

The Valvetronix are great amps, but unfortunately they are all fitted with budget jack sockets that are prone to oxidation/sticking. The headphone jack is a switch type, so if it sticks, the speaker won't be reconnected:

http://www.valvetronix.net/forums/inside-a-switching-jack-t3297.html

It's such a common problem that RetroBob even came up with a clever little tool to help clean the sockets:

http://www.valvetronix.net/forums/jack-cleaning-tool-t3853.html

JUst spray into the jack, it wont cause any damage and work the plug into the socket say 10 times give it time to dry maybe an hr and you should be good to go. The head phone socket is the usual culprit as when used with phones it disengages the speaker. Its prob stuck open not making contact. And yes they are crap, prone to sticking and corrosion, lots of people have probs with them, but touch wood i have 3 and never have a problem.

billrand,

How exactly does one go about cleaning the jack sockets? Do you just spray into them as they are on the amp or do you have to get inside and muck about? How much? If spraying them as they sit, could it drip into places that would possibly cause damage to the electronics?

If you have to go inside to do it would warranty issues ensue?

And if it's such a common problem why not just replace them for something a bit more reliable.
