It could be dry solders or tubes, but it may also be something quite simple such as oxidised jack sockets (a very common problem with certain Vox amps such as the Valvetronix amps). Clean all jack sockets thoroughly with electrical switch cleaner. You need a lubricating cleaner that's safe on plastics. Badly oxidised sockets may require several cleanings. Once you've sprayed in cleaner, insert a jack-plug in/out several times. Allow several minutes drying time before switching on your amp after each cleaning.

I'd suggest getting an amp tech to check for cold solder joints. Those can cause a connection to short out, fade out, crackle, pop and then go back to normal. It might just require someone with a schematic, experience and a solder gun to do it though.

I would check the sound by "test" button to see if it produces clear sound with the least delay. If the sound is not clear you may want to check/change the driver configuration. I would also see if there is anything that may be helpful with with the sample rate/buffer size besides using different channels...

That's great news & I'm really glad Vox/Korg USA were able to help and that you're enjoying your amp again. The Vox customer service teams do some tremendous work behind the scenes that doesn't always get the 'airing' it should, so it's always great to hear about top-notch customer support such as this.

Just got my amp back from Vox Amps USA yesterday!! It works great. Look folks, my AC30HW2X was several months out of warranty and had been to the local Vox repair shop a few times. Based solely on this thread, I had a Vox rep contact me, arrange for ship & repair FOR FREE and it was taken care and shipped back in less than 2 weeks. Things go wrong with technology. We know this. But when a company stands behind their product with outstanding service and customer care, your decision about that product changes for the better. It has to. Thanks to everyone at Vox and those in this forum who took the initiative to contact Vox. I am FOREVER a customer and advocate. THANKS!!!!!!!

Is Russos and Recording Services & Supply out of Salina one & the same (apart from the 'u' the initials seem to fit?).

Clearly, you're either hoping to get the amp repaired or exchanged for another one. I'd first go back to the store & discuss the problems & that things still aren't right even after being seen by a Vox repair centre, & see what they can do to help resolve the problem.

If you don't get the response from the store you're hoping for, I then suggest you contact Vox in the US (even if its strictly out of warranty), and see what they might be prepared to do. (If anyone from Vox USA is looking in, perhaps you could step in and help?)

If all else fails, you might try getting the amp checked over & repaired by a good amp tech. Retrobob, one of the forums techies, might be able to help diagnose the problem on forum. (He and his son run Joe Webb guitars but they're in California so a long way from you I suspect!)

I bought it new over a year ago (the payment cleared August 9, 2011) from Recording Services & Supply out of Salina, KS (an authorized Vox dealer). I have taken it to Russo's (a Vox Dealer and authorized repair per Vox website) a couple times throughout the first year due to continued issues. The issues remain. It is a huge source of frustration. Is there anything that can be done or am I stuck with a crap amp?

Some detailed background on age/purchase/warranty situation would be helpful to clarify first. Is the amp under warranty? How old is it & where did you buy it from? Did you buy it new or was it a used amp? If its within warranty, have you been back to the store to discuss your problems - is that Russo's or somewhere else? Have you asked for an exchange amp?

I continue to experience issues with my AC30HW2X. Before it was a tube rattle and some other crap, but I still randomly have a problem with the amp operating at reduced/half power. At times the amp will just crackle out to reduced power/output. I can crank the amp and it seemingly will not get any louder after about half way. I strike and hold a low chord and let it ring out and you can hear it crackle trying to attempt to get to full out output. This is so d*mn frustrating. This is a great amp when it decides to work. I've had it retubed, looked at by a local Vox shop (Russo's Music in Omaha, NE). The tech thought he fixed it as he thought it was the input jacks but this clearly wasn't it. Please... Vox... help. I have had this amp for a year and it just seems to be a never string of sh*t I have to deal with. I spent good money that I didn't really have because I thought I was getting a world class amp but instead have nothing but an unreliable piece of sh*t. It's like having a hot but batsh*t crazy girlfriend.

Please. Help.

Thanks, tweakfreak. No smell or anything, simply silence. I quickly powered off. I didn't know if, like with a regular tube amp output transformer, it could cause damage. After I put everything back to original, the VT20+ sounds fine. I've ordered a Neutrik jack as retrobob suggested. Thanks for everyone's help.

The speaker is not grounded as it would be in other amps. Read up on BTL-mode (bridge tied load), meaning that both ends of the speaker are driven out-of-phase by a separate part of the power amp. By screwing a jack to grounded metal you're effectively shorting half the power amp. Did anything smell funny? If not, the overload protection works.
