Just getting near retirement, and my "GAS" days are over. After probably spending more on equipment than Richard Branson has on aeroplanes i have got rid of most of my gear and settled on quite a basic set up.
I personally don't think guitarists are searching for the ultimate tone, it's just that we can't resist collecting, it's probably more of an illness than a quest.
I have made a few mistakes along the way e,g, altering the shape of a 64 fender mustang on a bandsaw at work, swapping a 71 strat for wheels for my hotrod, then crashing it. Tears are dripping on my keyboard. Maybe that could be a good subject for discussion, if you want to admit to huge blunders.
Anyway i'm off to go on ebay now, see what the bids are on that cherry 335.

I think it is normal to strive for improvement. We want to play better and so we practice in order to achieve more skill. Similarly, we upgrade our equipment so that we have better tone and more variety in what we can produce.

My first guitar was a Roy Rogers guitar. Should I have stayed with it?

I've been wondering what GAS stood for. I knew it was basically jonesing for some new gear. I just couldn't figure out the acronym. I was thinking it stood for "gotta acquire soon" or something like that. LOL.

I agree with you Voxman thru the years i have bought, sold or had stolen alot of gear.
But i'm on the upswing again and i'm loving all my Vox amps (3) for different reasons.
In regards to tone if i'm in a down mood i play differently too.Sometimes more aggresively.
Other times more bluesy mellow.lol
As for GAS i've always had it.
Like the boys say the endless pursuit of tone.lol

We all suffer from GAS to one extent or another, in the 'quest for tone'. The interesting thing is that over the years our tastes change & what we thought was 'perfect tone' years ago doesn't fit what we want now.

It's one of the reasons that I now try to hold onto gear, having had a ton of vintage gear slip through my fingers. Also, great tone can depend on mood & even weather conditions (eg air density) - you ever noticed that some days your tone is superb & on others its lack-lustre even on identical settings & guitars? Weird, but happens to everyone.

I typically have GAS periodically. After a long break from the guitar, I'm back into it and just got through a period of high GAS. Ended up getting a new guitar and a couple amps and I think my GAS is gone for a while. No desire for any more guitars and I'm loving my new amps (got a VOX AC4TV which is awesome and the new VT20+ which is awesome as well).

That AC4TV is so cool it makes me want to "collect" mini tube amps, so I wouldn't mind picking up a used AC4TV8 or mini at some point, but I need one like I need another hole in my head.

I have "passed GAS" (pardon me)....I think...

I am interested in the new Lil' Night Train as it's low powered.....

otherwise I don't think I'll be buying anything soon......most of my recent purchases have been disappointing and they are sold off or on consignment....

I did get a closeout Vox AC4TV8 from J&R a while back, this bucked the disappointment trend...I LOVE that little amp....

I don't lust for gear anymore, take a quick look at the catalogs that come in the mail..don't feel the urge to go out and buy something new....don't feel that I need anything more..

my name is tonehead and I am a gear addict

I just redid my whole board (all the Vox JS boxes!! weeeeeee) and retubed and rebiased my amp head from EL34Bs to 5881s (Tung Sol). I love my amp, it is a slightly moded Carvin V3 head, does it all for me. The Satriani Vox pedals, I mean seriously, nothing has ever inspired me to play more and better. Anyone got the new ICE 9 OD yet, I am crazy with this box, it dirt naps all the over drives I have had and used! I have been redoing my board pretty much every 6 months, but these new Vox JS boxes, nothing is going to push them off, I think have arrived at my base.

What is the best most versitile VOX amp? I am guessing the AC30??? I am not into little watt amps and I like multiple speakers, got to have at least a twin, I prefer the 4x12 cab myself. I am so digging the Satriani boxes I am thinking I should give a Vox amp a shot I do not know much about them or is they have perhaps a 100 watter head and half stack setup, I just prefer the half stack, nothing has more cow bell for me!
