Hello. I have a AD120Vt Head that I am having some problems with, and hoping you guys could help me out. Here's a brief background. I bought this head a while ago, and everything worked normally. It has been in my spare bedroom for a few months waiting for me to buy and 4x12 cabinet for it. Well, I finally got a Line 6 4X12 stereo cabinet for it. I hooked it up and it sounded like all 4 speakers weren't working. I did some testing with a 1X12 cabinet and it seems that the left channel only produces a slight hum that gets louder as I raise the volume. I have done a little reading around here to check some things out, and I plugged headphones into the headphone jack, and only get a slight hum as well. I don't know if it could be a sticking jack or not. The right channel works fine. Any other things I can check? Thanks for reading my rambling!!!

PS- What could have happend if I accidentally Y cabled the left speaker outputs together? Could I have burned something up?

If you know how to solder, just open the beast and maybe you could repair it by yourself, or just buy a headphone socket to replace it.

But take care of possible fatal current shock, even if the amp is unplugged ... go to a repair service if you've got no idea of what to do.

Sounds like a loose connection that needs resoldering. If the amp is still under warranty, I recommend you arrange a warranty repair.

Recently I used the headphone jack and after a while it started only working if i positioned the headphone input at a certain angle.
I double checked to see if it was the headphone cable, and it is not.

Now I am unable to get sound from the headphones no matter how I position the headphone input. What is worse, I no longer get any sound from the speakers.

Has anyone resolved this issue in the past?

Thanks Voxman.
Is this circuitry different in the tonelab then? Is the 12AX7 valve in the preamp on the tonelab? How do they keep the valve sound on the tonelab (technology cannot be that expensive, they HAD to do it on the tonelab since everything is "lineout". Or is there another reason for not doing it on the VT?

Whatever the case, as I said in another thread, i need to compare the TLST to the VT as far as lineout recording sounds. I started last night....I save these comments and more later in the that particular thread however.

Thanks for responses. I am new to this world of multi effects/modeling amps...terminology....just trying to get whats best for me.

so if when using lineout, the amp uses digital cabinet charecteristics, then how is the valvetronix different from , say a line 6 modeling amp or other solid state amp.

That's a fair question WW. When the valve-reactor circuitry is bypassed in the newer VT's and older 'chrome' amps, the amp is purely digital signal processing and I'd have to say would be similar to a Line 6 amp save for different modeling characteristics. I can only guess that cost was probably the key factor as to why the line out & headphone out are not via the Valvereactor circuit in the 'chromes'/VT, as they were in the original blue series.

Thanks for the replies. Ok, so if when using lineout, the amp uses digital cabinet charecteristics, then how is the valvetronix different from , say a line 6 modeling amp or othe rsolid state amp. Again, when using headphones only. i know the valve is in use when playing thru the speaker, and that the valvetronix claim to fame is this TUBE feel. So again, does using the lineout (headphones) reduce the mighty amp to any other solid stata amp? Or are there other things vox put in it that still make it sound more like a tube amp when using headphones?

Thanks again!!

The headphone/lineoutput cuts the valve reactor section of the amp out of the signal. The Digital processor adds cabinet characteristics to help make up for it.

The line out and headphone outs are before the tube. They are only after the tube on the original 'Blue' series Valvetronix. However, the modeling is excellent and you'll still get great tone.

I had to return a VOX VT50 a weekago to echange for a new one because my headphones jack started working in stereo, it started to only give me sound in one ear. No, it wasn't the headphones, I tested my headphones on the floor model before we exchanged it.

I have a question, i posted it in the Vox Amplifyers forum, but wanted to try it here too......

I recently bought a VT50. I have a question regarding the signal coming from the headphones jack. In the manual, page 8, section 1, it says "The signal that is output from this jack is taken from directly BEFORE the Valve Reactor power amp....". Isn't the power amp the 12AX7 tube that, according to page 5, first paragraph, captures "the feel and tone of the original amp for that model"?

IS the sound I get from the headphones jack missing the "real tube feel and sound"?
When I want to record using the line out (when i need be quiet), will this sound then be more like the pure solid state amps? I hope not. I hope I am misinterpretting. I wanted this amp for the tube sound, and would be dissappointed if the line out (headphones jack) was nothing special. Also, how does this differ, if any, from the Tonelab, which needs a line out to a speaker so you can hear anything. That product also claims to be built on the valvetronix technology, offering real tune sound..... If they don't give me the tube sound on the VT amp via the lineout, how could they/did they do it with theTonelab?

Thanks and sorry for being a little wordy.

Hi, I bought a superb sounding VT50 a few months ago and have been verry happy with this amp so far.
Untill yesterday ... I finaly wanted to start recording,to a pc using the headphone/line out jack . I plugged it in and it worked fine at first. Then after a while the sound started to crack and mute when i touched the connected wire. I tried to unplug the jack and found out there was no sound comming out of the amp's speaker. Then plugged the jack back in and heard sound comming true the right headphone speaker only. Plugging and unplugging didn't help to get both sides working, neither to get sound out of the amp speaker.

I looked for known problems on the internet, and found out that the headphone print circuit board might be the weaker link in this one. i wanted to be sure if that was the case, so I opened up the amp's back, took a look at the midget headphone jack"s cuicuit thru a looking glass and YES.... Soldering had broken of the board.

I have read this problem a couple of times in different forums, where evrybody states that this problem is due to the poor design of the circuit and its unfortunate placing (connected directly to the socket).

Or as somebody replied : QUOTE: " I too have seen a number of similar problems reported on forums re the 'Chrome' Valvetronix amps and seen similar comments from techies that have expressed concern at the weak soldering issue you refer to. I'd therefore also suggest you copy in Vox R&D (perhaps a post here in the R&D section too) requesting their views on the problem as this does appear to be a weak design issue. " END QUOTE

My questions :
1) Has Vox found a solution to this weaker spot ?
2) If I return my amp to get it fixed under waranty, will the circuit be replaced with a similar weak one wich will definatly break again after using it a couple of times ?
3) and if so Is there a solution to bypass the weak circuit board , using a headphone / line out socket external to that circuit .

I hope for someone to come up with an great idea about this .......I love that amp to much to see it ending in a corner as a nice decorative feature !

Thanks
