This is an excellent topic, wish I had read something like this before I went out and bought an amp, having said that it looks like I made the right choice (for me) an AC30C2 which i have now converted to a C2x

It's by far and away the best guitar amp I have ever used or owned, the tones range from Hank Marvin to Brian May, with Keith Richards somewhere in the middle, it's a very usable amp in pretty well all situations IMHO

Hey I'm there..here! I'm new to Vox. I just bought an AC50CP head and quad. I have an issue with the over brightness in the 'clean' No1 channel using my Fender Strat. Cutting the treble with the Tone-cut and/or the treble knob just reduces the warmth and the bass and middle controls will not get it back. Instead it sounds 'cardboardy'. No2 channel is marginally better but too much gain is required to get the thickness that is lacking in Ch1.
Other Fender strats have same results. The amp produces plenty of headroom power but has no warmth and no balls!
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Thankyou. Lennie

I think it would be really cool to add the Handwired series, and all the other amps in Vox's line up, to the tone room. It would be cool to have the interface set up just like it is now, but for all the other amps. It would be an awesome way for the loyal Vox community to share what kind of sounds we are getting out of these awesome amps.

The AC302/2X are great sounding amps & I certainly wouldn't worry abut who's using it. Older 'traditional' AC30's (typically the 6 input models with Top Boost) have their charms and some will sound better than others. But they lack modern features as I explained. So it's back to what you want, where/how you're going to use the amp, your budget etc.

So, probably now about time to stop asking questions, and to get out there to give as many amps (different AC30's, other Vox amps, & other makes/amp types) as you can find some serious welly to see which suits you, your wallet, and your ears best! - Cos you can't find that out here! LOL

And unless you really need something as big, loud and heavy as an AC30, don't forget to try out the AC15 and Night Train NT15 & NT50 amps too - all great amps!

The AC30CC2 is the old model. The AC30C2 is the newer model and is better in many ways. Its simpler like the earlier AC30's. The chassis is re-designed so changing tubes is really easy and it doesn't overheat. The overall build quality is slightly better too. It also doesn't have a tube rectifier which was the cause of much of the reliability issues in the cc. Sound-wise there is little to choose between them but the Greenbacks are better than the Wharfdale's in my opinion. I own both amps and would always recommend the newer C2 over the CC2 to anyone that asked me.

The AC takes pedals well so getting other sounds like ZZ is easy, just use a pedal like the MXR Bad Ass '78 :-)

I don't see why the custom classic should be better than the new custom, I really think a good speaker makes a big difference, in the custom you already have 2 celestion greenbacks made in the UK, much better than 2 cheap wharfdale, even the circuitry of the custom is much more in line with the 60s and 70s models than it was the CC, the new custom series is a big improvement sonically wise.

I dont know about the Marshall because i wont be playing any metal or anything really hard and it seems to be yoused quite often for that!

Im sorry most of my playing would be playing in church/studio!

Richard you like the AC30c better than Custom Classic iv always heard the cc2 is better, good to hear someone disagree who has had experience with a 70's model ac30!

No Marshall compares to a Vox & vice-a-versa - very different amps. Both are great, just depends on what you like - Vox chime vs Marshall crunch.

You still haven't said what you're using the amp for?

People do get confused on AC30 variants, so you can't necessarily rely on what others call their AC30. Re AC30CC2 (Custom classic) I much prefer the new AC30 Custom anyway - to my ears, much more like the AC30 I used to have in the 70's.

Wow! Thank you so much for your time Rich!!!

Well for me the only pedals would be delay, maybe reverb if needed and a good disortion pedal to get that zz top Gimme All Your Lovin tone!:)

Guitars that would be played: American Fender Strat HSS and Gibson SG Standard

The most i would like to spend is $1500, iv tried the vox's and really like them along with marshall! But seem to like Vox better, what marshall do you believe compares with the Vox ac30? But personally i couldnt stand fender amps(tried a twin rv and others)

Hey Rich when artist like the dude off lifehouse and others say they use the Vox custom classic..does that mean they are yousing the VoxCC2?

Thank you!!!

I stand to be corrected here but (to the best of my knowledge) I believe that ALL the new Vox AC15 and AC30 amps are made in China, even the hand-wired versions.

What is your budget?
What size venues will you be playing?
Will you be miking up to the PA?
Will you be using effects? If so, which ones?
If you use a pedal board, which one and what connection/switching facilities do you have?

The latter questions are relevant for amp features. So If you need an FX loop to run time based pedals (eg delay, modulation), older AC30's and the AC30HW don't have this so you'll have to run all your FX directly in front of the amp with these amps.

The 'standard' latest version of the AC30 line is the AC30C2 Custom that's fitted with 2 x 12" Celestion G12M Greenback Speakers, and the amp includes an effects loop, top-boost circuit, reverb, & tremolo. These will set you back circa £700 UK.

To get a more 'authentic' AC30 chime I think most would agree you need the Celestion Alnico Blue speakers. In the latest AC30C2X Custom, the Celestion Alnico Blues are made in China, but following complaints that the previous Chinese Alnico Blues (used in the previous AC30 Custom Classic) were not made with the same cone material and thus sounded different to the UK made Alnico Blues, Vox now uses the original cone material so these latest Chinese made Celestion Alnico Blues sound identical to the UK versions. An AC30C2X will set you back in the region of £1,150 UK.

Over recent years, whilst Vox has endeavoured to capture the essential 'flavour' of the original Vox AC30 amps from the JMI days, Vox no longer makes amps to these exact original specifications. Each of the more recent AC30 variants provides a different 'take' on the original AC30 theme with variations in features and tone that endeavour to make the modern AC30's more flexible and versatile to more readily fit with the needs of more modern players.

So, if you have the budget and the craving for an original 1960's AC30 you need to look at the second-hand market - but you need to know what you're buying! There's a lot of info at the Vox Showroom here: http://www.voxshowroom.com/equipment/index.html

Alternatively, the new handwired AC30HW2X incorporating traditional turret board construction and a Birch-ply braced cabinet as well as a GZ34 rectifier valve, is an awesome amp that will set you back about £1,550 and is the closest amp to the original JMI design currently made by Vox. It incorporates some modern features including:
• The Normal channel provides an additional BRIGHT switch.
• The top boost channel provides a HOT/COOL switch to achieve even more gain
• Master Volume/BYPASS switch completely bypasses the Master Volume section
• OP mode switch cut the amp’s Output Power level in half

However, the AC30HW has no FX loop, no reverb, or tremolo because (for purists) these additions interfere with the 'pureness' of the signal chain.

If you want a UK handwired AC30 made to the original JMI specifications, JMI are back in business ((in direct competition with Vox, I should add) selling handwired 'AC30's' under the JMI badge. But these aren't cheap and there's a waiting list - prices for a JMI AC30 TB 6-input amp with Celestion Alnico Blues speakers will set you back about £2,400 - so you need to be a pretty serious player and very VERY fussy and acoustically focussed on original AC30 tone, in order to drop that type of cash on an amp!

Now, having given you all that info, you ask whether an AC30 is a good amp for you. That's an excellent question to ask - but the only person who can answer that is you. And the only way you're going to find out is to be open minded and invest some serious time in trying out lots of different amp makes and models - Vox, Fender, Marshall, Laney, Orange, H&K, Bugera, Mesa, PRS etc etc (depending on your budget) to see which tones/feel/dynamis/features 'grabs' you! This is VERY personal - we can all give you opinions but its only your opinions and ears that matters.

I'm assuming you're a gigging player and want an amp that sounds great at volume. BUT if you're just a bedroom player then IMHO an AC30 is NOT for you. There will be those that may disagree, but in my view an amp like an AC30 is fundamentally designed as a gigging amp that will give you great tone & dynamics...but to get that real Vox tone, the amp has to be pushed, the power-valves have to run hot, and the ONLY way to get that 'tone' is to play at serious above bedroom volumes! The new AC30's have a Master Volume control - useful, but not the same as pushing power-valves. Or you could get yourself an attenuator e.g. a 'Hot plate' that will let you crank the amp whilst keeping volumes down. But that's extra expense and regardless of what anyone tells you, there is a trade off in tonal quality.

Rich
