vitoralvesbr, in general, the amp models you'd use for nice clean tones are the ones on the left side of the dial, including the AC30.

I have a VT80+. When playing my Strat (3 single-coil) in manual mode, when i switch on the "pedal" effect there's a big jump in volume. More accurately, when i switch off the effect to play the "clean" section of a song, the volume drops by about 80%. This only happens with the Strat, with my Les Paul there's smooth transition between the effect on, and off. Any idea why this is, what i can do about it (beyond setting up channels on the amp, dedicated to the Strat)?

I should add that my Fender cables were not the professional line which has a lifetime guaranty and looks pretty substantial, they were a less expensive line, so my comments only refer to the less expensive ones.

Some additional info that might help make some sense of it....volume is one if the settings that is saved in a pre-set. Say you've selected a pre-set, then adjusted the volume to suit what you want at the time. As soon as you select a different pre-set, the volume goes to whatever is saved in that pre-set regardless of where your physical volume knob is currently set. When you touch the volume knob now, it overrides the pre-set and becomes "active" - depending where it is relative to what's saved in the current pre-set, the actual volume may get louder or softer. Sounds confusing but it's really not, as long as you're aware that the volume is part of the pre-set.

Hope that helps a little.

Tracy1965, putting all your comments together, sounds like you're setting your amp with too much distortion and getting a darker tone than you want. Adding a distortion pedal is just about the worst way to go then.

For a more 'vibrant' tone you need to open up the power selector so the amp can 'breathe' - set too low it can sap some of your tone. The master volume controls tube saturation, so don't overdo this - typically 1-3pm on the dial gives best results. More than this (especially with higher gain models) can muddy your tone.

Re amp models, try using a clean model eg Blackace, and adding one of the built in pedals (eg tube overdrive or other distortion option) to add some 'grit' rather than trying to do it all with the amp models. Re 'adding 'Sag', try the Bassman model which is famous for having a bit more sag. Set with lower gain this gives a nice 'full' clean and works really well with teles and strats. Adding a little tube overdrive, spring reverb and a bit of tape delay will give you some great edge/transparent gain.

Also, don't forget about the guitar's tone and volume - rolling the volume off a fraction can make a world of difference.

Try using the amp in Manual mode ie presets off.
Then the position of the volume control is a more accurate indicator of how loud it's going to be.
There is still some variation in volume from one amp model to the next, but it's minor and won't make anyone jump.

Responding to your comments in order:
1. I understand that you like the clean sound of Boutique Clean, but that doesn't mean you won't prefer another amp model with your pedal. You have nothing to lose by trying out all the other models. I use a pedal board with my amp and it has 2 very different sounding OD pedals which I use either separately, or together for a nice crunchy sound. My preferred amp model to use with it is Tweed 4x10, sometimes Super 4x10 and occasionally AC30TB. This is with a Strat style guitar. With a Les Paul style guitar, I found those models too bass heavy and prefer Tweed 2x12 or (I think) Deluxe Tweed.

2. Master Volume at 2:00 is great but the Power Level on low really sucks tone. You should turn that up as high as possible without the background hiss bothering you. For me that means that in a quiet room, like when I'm teaching guitar, I back off the PL until the hiss is not bothersome, which is around 3:00. When I'm gigging or jamming and everyone is pretty loud, PL is up full because the hiss is drowned out. Much better tone that way.
Adjust loudness with the Volume knob, it is much more transparent. And play with the Gain control with each new amp model you try. It works differently with each one.

3. I'm having trouble understanding your 4th paragraph. According to everything else you've said, you are trying to get your Vox to sound like a Marshall. Your stated goal is to get your amp to sound like a Plexi which is a Marshall. You were able to do this with two other amps, one of which was a Vox, and you liked that. So clearly in that case, that Vox didn't sound like a Vox, if it sounded like a Plexi. And with the Valvetronix amps, they're not supposed to sound like a Vox, unless you're using one of the Vox models. It sounds like a Fender when using the Fender models, etc. That's the whole point of a modeling amp.

So I don't get rejecting the amp because you didn't find your tone with maybe 2 of the 22 amp models. You may not find it, but you need to try the others before giving up. And you must turn up the Power Level, or you really don't know what the amp is capable of sounding like.

All the factory presets have set volume levels - some are louder than others. If you save user patches in one of the 8 user memories, you can set the volume levels to taste on each patch.

Master Volume and power-level controls affect volume globally. The Volume affects individual patches. The Master Volume also controls the amount of tube you're hearing and you don't want this too high or too low. So getting a balance is important. Read hear re. getting a good tone and sensible home volume levels:

I only got my vt20+ today & it happened to me plugged it all in went to first setting thought it was neighbour friendly volume wise & when I turned the knob to us blues I think it was there was a terrible row from speaker where it was to loud so turned all the knobs down & re did it for that setting , it happened several times when I tried out different amp settings so I just turn the master dial right down before changing amp settings ,think its normal, but annoying though , im going to set a few how I like it & hopefully that will sort me out . I made a cock up , I thought when it said 33 songs were on it you could jam along to the tune didn't realise its simply how they set the amp up when they played the tune maybe should have got a fender but theres a lot on this amp & I can put the mp3 thro it , hopefully someone whos had one a while cam let us know if that's normal having to reset volume etc each time you change preset , cheers

Ho everybody. I'm new user of the VT20+ and I am little bit concerned about one thing. When I play on certaint volume and than switch to another AMP using AMP selector, the volume is really high and I need to wiggle the volume nob to put the volume to right value. Is that normal? I would expect volume will be the same when switching AMPs. Please advice me if I should return the VT20+ or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks.

I Make all my cables quickly with the Bill Lawrence (Wilde) cable system very reasonable and easy peasy, used them for years no problems. These are a Low capacitance cable that allow more high end frequency to reach the amplifier, coupled with a push pull guitar volume switching between capacitors, allows me to switch between 600, 700hz for clean 1900,2200 for distortion.

This is another secret to my tone! I noticed the differences immediately on the purity of tone, when I used this cable and have never gone back. I've been somewhat hesitant in sharing this on the forum, because most of you cant even hear the differences between tubes!!!
