media on "AC4TVH hum. Normal?"

I have the AC4TVH and matching V112TV cabinet. And first of all I'd like to say that I am in love with this amplifier. It sounds beautiful. I'm having only one very small issue with it, but I thought I'd ask about it to see if it's normal. My apologies if this question has been covered somewhere before, I haven't been able to find an answer.

The amp is outputting a reasonably quiet low frequency hum. The hum always seems to be there. With the volume all the way down, with or without an instrument plugged in, it's still there. Turning the volume up or turning the tone knob does not have any impact on the hum. I've also read about lights or other electronics causing noise like this, but I've tried many different locations through the house and that hasn't had an effect.

The only thing that changes the volume of the hum is the attenuator knob. It is barely audible at 1/4W, noticeable at 1W up close, and I can hear it rather clearly anywhere in the room at the 4W setting.

So I guess my question is this: is this normal for this amplifier? Does anyone else have a decent hum at the 4W setting with the volume off? Does anyone have one that's dead quiet? It wouldn't bother me so much if it's normal, just like to know if things are right or not.

And one other question, is it possible that a hum like this could be caused by the tubes? I've been doing some reading and a few people have said that swapping out the 12AX7 preamp tube for a different brand has reduced the hum in their AC4, but they didn't specify if it was the typical hum or noise at higher volumes, or the kind of hum I'm experiencing with the volume at 0 and no instrument plugged in. I'd be very happy if a different preamp tube could potentially reduce or eliminate the noise. I don't have one on hand currently to try and I am a little reluctant to open it up.

Thank you very much. And I have to say again that I am very pleased with this amplifier, I would definitely recommend it. I'd just like to fix this particular issue if it's possible in any way.

Been playing my 50s tribute all day, and comparing it with my 2008 Standard. One thing I notice is how versatile the P90 pickups are. When selecting different pickup configuration, there is a very distinct tone between pickups. Anyone else observe this?

Check it out if you hear what I hear.

Hi everyone.
I've been reading a bit a bout the impact of changing an output transformer on an amp's dinamic headroom.

Now, please don't copy and paste stuff from the internet. I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with upgrading the output transformer and increasing the headroom.

This is what company's like mercury and some others advertise.

I guess my questions are:

1. Will it really be effective on a guitar amp? (As far as getting a cleaner tone at higher volumes)
2. Will it change the tone character of my amp or will it just be able to go louder without breaking up?

To give some background on Why I'm asking it.

I own an AC4TV, and it's simply the best amp I've ever owned.
But as everyone now It will break up very quickly. It is absolutely fine for bedroom practice. (And I actually think it's louder than what everyone says it is) But I don't know how it will behave in a band practice, etc...
I love the little sucker and I rather get it moded than to buy a night train. (If that's the case).

Best regards.

Ed

Anyone else had a problem getting a strap through the recall? Read on...

Well, I read the notice the recall. I called Vox customer service in about mid-July to request the promised replacement strap. Two weeks ago, I realized I had received so I called to request the replacement strap again. To date, no strap has arrived.

The real issue here is that in both instances when I called (as instructed by the notice on this site), the customer service department did not seem to know 1) there was a recall in effect for one of their products, 2) how to get an item to a customer who was not a dealer. While I LOVE my AC30CC2 and want to love my Night Train, knowing I cannot rely on Korg to backup the items they are selling is disturbing to say the least.

It will be interesting to see if anyone from Korg/Vox responds and can find a replacement strap per the recall. Also, I have been around these forums long enough to know there are a few of you that are the unofficial apologists. I love you guys! You have great ideas all the time. While I love you guys, I want to see if actual Korg/Vox responds.

Hi, im new to this forum, just sold my vox AD15VT as im going to upgrade to a Vox Night train for my portable setup.
its wont be my main setup (i use a Framus CS 30W EL84 with matching 2x12 with one greenback/one V30)

anways ive already purchased the night train 1x12 cab. its the cheapest cab where im located and comes loaded with a Greenback. my problem is...the greenback is 16ohms...and if i want to be able to use the night train cab with all of my amps AND be able to integrate it with my other cab...i need it to be 8 0hms

i will be purchasing hte night train head in hte next week...which i believe has 8 and 16ohms outs...

so i have to decide which speaker to swap the 16ohm greenback for...gBs are one of my favourite speakers...but since i already have one and also a V30...i was thinking of trying something else to add to the tonal palette.

any one have any experiece with these speakers with the night train head?

Celestion -
G12T-75 (ive owned the before and have a love hate relation ship)
G12K-100
G12H-30
Seventy 80

Eminence
Private Jack
Lady Luck

Mesa
MC-90 Black shadow (ive ownde this in a mark III combo)

WGS (shipping to me is a killer $wise)

im thinking the night train will suit lower wattage speakers, but im also debating whether having something with higher wattage will be better in hte 1x12, seeing as i will want to be using the NT cab with a wider selection of amps.

Picked up my lovely new ac4 combo from my local guitar shop. However, it turns out I got the 8 inch model, and not the 10 inch (I thought they'd stopped selling the 8 inch, so I didn't look too closely).

It does sound great, it really does. But should I try and take it back for the 10 inch?

Apart from a slightly increased bass response on the 10 inch (a slight plus for the 10 inch), and a lower minimum power output on the 8 inch (a slight plus for the 8 inch in my book, as it means I can play late at night!), would I notice a difference?

Hi all

I have tried the AC4TV in a music shop, and I think it sounds marvellous, so I have ordered the head+cab version from the shop (they didn't have it in stock). Like so many others, I still have some worries about the 1/4 W still being a bit too loud for my apartment. There's no family, but neighbours may complain. So I've been contemplating on getting an attenuator, but then the price for the AC4 head + attenuator will actually be more expensive than the night train head alone.

What I find on forums on the net is very ambiguous as to whether the Night Train can give good crunch/distortion at such low levels. Some say it can, because it has a master volume, others say it can't because the output tube distortion is much nicer than the preamp tube distortion you get with a master volume amp like night train on low volumes, and that Vox's distortion often sound thin when the master volume is all the way down.

There's a chance my guitar shop will let me change my mind and buy the Night Train head instead, therefore I'd like to get some qualified advise: Is it true that the Night Train crunch/distortion is not as great on low volumes as the AC4TV? If this is true, I'll just relax and buy the AC4TVH when it arrives at the shop. If it's not true, I will talk to the guitar shop and see if they will let me buy the NT head instead.

Hi, a friend of mine that has replaced many tubes for me just put an EH12ax7 gold pin and EH Power tube in my AC4tv head.
I now have absolutely no output. Not even humming when turning the volume up. There is power getting to the head.
It was fine before. Anybody have any idea what it may be. OT maybe? Or bad tubes? There is no crackling or hissing and I have switched guitar cables, guitars etc... still nothing.
Any suggestions. Other than the obvious, put the old tubes in. I'd do it myself but I have no experience and I know there is high voltage.

I cant believe it....at last nights gig I had a second Dual terror fail on me.
First a crackilng sound when hitting a note followed by a sound that can only be described as the groaning of a dying wilderbeast.
Thankfully I had my trusty Night train on hand and it blew everyone away.
Im off to the shop today to hopefully exchange it for another NT to use as my backup...two night trains are better than one.
Is there something going on with the quality control in the chinese factory at Orange or am I just unlucky?
In any case the NT sounded great.

I have been wondering about my night train's outputs. Can you use both outputs at the same time to create a "mini stack." Can someone help me with this question? I have heard somewhere that you can't, but I would like to think that as not true.

Another night train question...
If it is possible to have both outputs, does Vox sell a night train cab with an 8 ohm Vox custom Greenback speaker(the standard night train cab contains a Vox 16 ohm custom Greenback)? A night train stack would be an epic setup. I wouldn't mind Vox posting on this topic.

                       Thanks!!!!!

I've always been curious to hear just how my AC4TV 10", AC4TV with 112TV cabinet and my AC15CC1 would compare if I recorded them doing the same song, mostly to see if I could tell them apart... Anyway, I recorded the three amp configurations and made a 'quiz' on my homepage. Just visit my site link below and check out the sound samples and highlight the black box on the bottom to see which was what sample. Have fun and give me some feedback on what you hear. http://andrewandtheresa.net

PS - I actually liked each recording configuration for it's own reason. I didn't favor one over another really.

Hi all,

I got an AC4tv a while back, as a graduation gift. First one arrived dead, so we got it returned and the new one works fine. I love the tube break up, it's loud, it's awesome.

A while back--maybe a month ago, I noticed that it would suddenly get really loud. I would play at the 12 o'clock position for volume (1/4th watt mode), then suddenly the volume would JUMP. I could then turn the volume all the way down, and still get sound out of it. Sometimes it would die off, and if I played with the volume at 'nothing' for a while, it would slowly fade to no sound with some playing.

Recently, I plugged the amp in again, and it happened. I was playing it quietly, and suddenly the volume jumped to a fully cranked volume. This time the volume did not settle back down, so I started to play with it a bit. I set my strat to give my a 60 cycle hum, and turned the tone way up so I could hear a constant hum from the amp. I found that there were some positions that were quiet-- a few paces past fully off. If any of you have ever had to tune an old radio by fine tuning a knob until you hear a "click" in the radio static....thats basically what I did. When I found that sweet spot, the volume would go to its normal level. However, after some jamming it would suddenly jump up and startle the *^#$ out of me.

notes:

-When the volume does this on the amp, it basically goes to full on cranked. It wont stay like this either
-Shaking the amp sometimes stops it (i know, not suppose to do this, but while moving the input electrical cord it stopped for a while)
-happens on all watt modes, all tone modes
-before problems occurred I would play with a TS 808 and my strat, and the TS 808 was usually cranked pretty high on volume or distortion, dunno if that could be a problem
-Also got some of the craziest feedback while playing with it this time--something that had never happened before.

I have no problem if I am playing at full volume with this amp, but I honestly need the 1/4 watt mode and low volume some times.

p.s it also does this without the pedal plugged in, and I also cant test my guitar as i only have one.

I'm guessing its a tube problem?

I have a Boss GT-10 and I'm currently using it with a Fender Mini Deluxe, Cheap, tiny amplifier, because I hate the sound I get when connected to my Vox vt-30 (Something is wrong with my vt-30, too. Sometimes it won't turn on, and when it finally does, the red light flashes for a few seconds before the amp turns on). So I was thinking about buying an ac4tv to use with my GT10. For this to be successful I need the ac4tv to be totally clean, also at a little bit higher volume, and as the volume on this amp is also the gain, I figured that might not be possible. I mean, the amp really is only 4 watts.

Will appreciate it very much if you can enlighten me about this matter.

Thanks :) :)

Oh, and if you know of a better amp to use for this purpose, I'm open to suggestions. :)

Hey all, twice now while playing I've had the sound suddenly die on my Night Train, even though the indicator remains on and the tubes are all lit. I've checked the guitar and cables and speaker and they're all fine.
I was told that the High Tension fuse had failed and to replace it, but it was fine when I checked the first time around, and the amp magically worked again when I put it back together. Now it's cut out again.

Can anyone tell me if they know what specific issue this could be so myself or the amp techs I know can fix it? Thanks

Hey everyone!

My name is David and I am a new Vox owner having purchased a TLST last week, and I am in love! I will be bringing it to school with me in the fall (where I will be in a single dorm room), and while I am currently using Grado SR80 cans to play through (which would great) I was wondering of the any of the AC4's would be a good fit for me, seeing as I need to play at low volumes, but I still want it to sound good. My Traynor 20W tube amp is too big for me to take, and my school is a 2 hour plane ride from where I live (Toronto to Halifax).

Having dialled in my favourite tones on the TLST (classic rock style), will the AC4TV be a nice fit? I'll be playing with an American Deluxe Series Stratocaster. I've seen Voxman's Youtube clip of the AC4TVH, and I must say, it sounds great!

Thanks!
