celticdude on "AC4TVH hum. Normal?"

Hello all,

New member here. I joined mainly to find out about the hum issue. Three weeks ago I bought the AC4TV combo. Absolutely loved the sound!. But after a week I noticed the same hum as the OP. No instrument plugged in, volume all the way down, most noticeable at the 4-watt output level.

I returned it, and ordered the Night Train. Even more amazing sound. Yet it too had the hum! This time it was most audible on the triode mode, but was there some with pentode, and even sometimes on standby. I just returned it today. The floor model at the Guitar Center also hummed, but not as badly.

Is this really normal? If it is, then I will have to decide if I can live with it. However, my 2 guitar-playing friends have various tube amps between them, and those don't hum (except maybe the older ones.) Seems like a new amp just shouldn't do this.

Personal note: I'm not a guitar player. I play mandolin, and am looking for the perfect amp for an electric octave mandolin. The NT seems to be it, AFA sound and what I play.

Question on etiquette: I was going to post separately about the Night Train hum. Would that be okay, or considered excessive?

Thanks, DWP

BTW - the reason for the nice tonal response in the 50's Tribute & why it's so different to a LP Standard is that in addition to P90's it has a chambered body & an orange-drop capacitor in the tone circuit.

I got the gold top tribute from my local sam ash music store last week. They had a bunch of these guitars, but after people finding out, they were all sold out within days. They also had a couple of honeyburst.

I must admit I'm not a fan of the MBDR's - I find then too fizzy & lacking in tonal definition - I'm a Marshall crunch fan at heart! But definitely a ballsy tone! ; )

Very nice sounding guitar - & LP's especially look lovely in gold top finish. P90's are very nice - only downside is that by definition they are single coil & can pick up more noise than a h/b - but they are a little brighter & very responsive with great tonal range as you've intimated. Congrats & enjoy!

Been playing my 50s tribute all day, and comparing it with my 2008 Standard. One thing I notice is how versatile the P90 pickups are. When selecting different pickup configuration, there is a very distinct tone between pickups. Anyone else observe this?

Check it out if you hear what I hear.

I think the NT is one of the greatest amps Vox has ever made. I just don't know if I'd have a use for a 2W version. Cute, though.

I put a JJ 12at7/ECC81 in the preamp and it really increased headroom and kept about 90-95% of the volume of the 12ax7. I also got a great Mullard EL84 that, at least to my ears, makes the amp louder and fuller than the stock Sovtek.

I guess bottom line is, tubes can make a difference. Most places have an SM57 for your amp anyways, so try to make it sound as good as you can and as full as you can and then mic it. Worst case, you dont have a mic and you just end up putting the amp further up on stage. Modifying the cab to a 1/4 open cab really helped me a lot with hearing it better, maybe that could work too?

Anyone else had a problem getting a strap through the recall? Read on...

Well, I read the notice the recall. I called Vox customer service in about mid-July to request the promised replacement strap. Two weeks ago, I realized I had received so I called to request the replacement strap again. To date, no strap has arrived.

The real issue here is that in both instances when I called (as instructed by the notice on this site), the customer service department did not seem to know 1) there was a recall in effect for one of their products, 2) how to get an item to a customer who was not a dealer. While I LOVE my AC30CC2 and want to love my Night Train, knowing I cannot rely on Korg to backup the items they are selling is disturbing to say the least.

It will be interesting to see if anyone from Korg/Vox responds and can find a replacement strap per the recall. Also, I have been around these forums long enough to know there are a few of you that are the unofficial apologists. I love you guys! You have great ideas all the time. While I love you guys, I want to see if actual Korg/Vox responds.
