When an external speaker cab is plugged in, the AC30VR (and the VT100) onboard speakers are muted. That's no big deal, but is there a way around that, without harming the amp?

Recieved my AC30 VR this week, arrived five days after placing order. Guitar Center / Musician's Friend is a fantastic company. I have found my base tone amp. Makes it fun to pick up my guitar again.
This is my first VOX amp. I've owned another amp (will not mention name or brand) for some time, and just could not find the sound I was after. Its not a bad amp by any standard, and I am going to give it to my seven year son.
I play for enjoyment and meditation at home, and great tone makes it fun to play. I was torn between the AC30 CC, AC30VR, and the Valvetronix VT100. I ordered the VT 100 yesterday, as well, and will use the AC30 VR as my base amp and the VT100 for fun and exploring. My son can borrow one of these when he gets older.

Hey choryphe7,
My Ac30 cc2 is brand new and also has a hugh hum when turning off standby. The 'helicopter' sound in the tremolo and pulsing green stanby light as posted earlier are present as well. My dealer already replaced the power tubes (matched dr tubes). Back home (unfortunatley I didn't try it a the dealer's) the problem was still there. Could the problem really be a false soldering? It looks more like a transformer/power problem!

I have tried to use a Marshall vibratrem pedal with my Vox valvetronic AD50vt amp and I can't get it to work. My other 2 Marshall pedals (bluesbreaker and Gov'nor) work perfectly with my amp and leads. I have tried it with a 9 volt adaptor and with a battery. I have taken it to a music shop and tried it out on their Marshall amp with their leads and the vibratrem worked fine. My amp is set to clean. Has anybody got any ideas why it won't work with my amp? thanks a lot!

jarledge on "cab design idea"

I have long wondered why guitar cabs haven’t been updated, the idea of a 4x12 cab has remained unchanged for decades. It doesn't make sense to have 4 of the same model speaker replicating the same signal. The frequency range for a guitar is basically in the middle of what is audible to the average ear but the range is still fairly broad. PA technology has come a long way with the utilization of sound engineering, acoustic tuning, more consistent manufacturing techniques, and use of both internal and external crossovers.

My idea is to develop a speaker cab that uses one 15 inch or 12 inch woofer that handles the lows and low mids with a smaller 8 or 6 inch middle range woofer and a specially designed horn/high end tweeter. The separation of the guitars frequencies’ would result in higher fidelity and increased response. The cab should house an eq section to adjust the speaker response so that user can fine tweak each speaker's signal in order to optimize the cab's ability to respond to any different amp head that is used.

I have done research on this idea and have found that no other guitar amp company offers a product like this. I got the idea because i was searching for an amp/cab combination that would be able to handle the low end of my eight string. The lowest string is an F sharp which I like to drop the E but no amp out there other then a PA setup can handle it. I feel that a cab like this would appeal to a seven or eight string player as well as any other player that needs more definition and better response from their sound.

I’d love to see this idea come to fruition as well as have a part in its design. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to speak with me about the idea. I do hope to hear from you.

Thank you for time,

Jordan Arledge

P.S. I also have a couple of other amp design ideas if you are interested in hearing about them.

I know it isn't a night train but i found this clip interesting as i am looking at other speakers to use with my night train. I have a 2x12 mesa boogie recto cab with vintage 30s. I originally bought it as a half back but i dont like most open back cabs so i closed the back on it. I am happier with the sound but I'd like a speaker with a more robust bottom end. I have an 8 string and the lows aren't what i want them to be.

man oh man, words are not enough to explain the bliss i am feeling right now. all i can say is WOW. the tone of this ac30 is just crazy good. i plugged into the top boost channel with the volume about 10:00, bass 10:00, treble 12:00, cut 12:00. plugged in my tele and U2ish tones where just flying out. i bought this one over the new custom series because this one has an all birch ply cab and the other is MDF. anyways THANK YOU VOX! you are amazing at what you do and if your guitars are as god as this AC30 i think i may just buy one of your guitars in the near future.

Great thread. I saw a few people recommend higher-wattage speakers (the Governor at 75w, the Black Shadow at 90w), and I'm wondering how these would play with the NT's 7.5w mode. I've heard that speakers need a minimum power input to get up to their rated tonality; is 7.5w enough even for these more capacious speakers?

I'm hoping so; I'm really liking what I've heard about the Governor in particular...

'Better' is a purely subjective word - so, better in what respect exactly?

Is a Ferrari better than a family car? A Ferrari's faster, corners like its stuck to the road, & looks great, but costs a fortune to buy, run & insure. A family car is more comfortable, is cheaper to run, and you can carry the kids and your shopping in it, but is less exciting & is no good for racing! So, each is 'better' than the other but for different things.

Same with amps - so without clarification & more info, your question is meaningless! Be clear as to exactly what you mean, and give some info on what you're using the amp for, the type of music you play, how long you've been playing, where & how you'd be using it, and what are the top 5 things you want from an amp.

Also, do you have any requirements/limitations re size & weight, what experience of amps do you have, & how do you feel about ongoing maintenance & costs? And what's your budget? If you're planning to use external pedals, what do you need & what's your budget for these?

In other words, it's not a case of which amp is 'better' - but which amp is better for YOU!!

nobody seems to know when it was made other than between 1965 and 1969 - anyone?

I was once tol by an Italian luthier that the numbers were just sequential and didn't mean anything.

If you know for a fact that a "29" was made in 1967, I'd guess a "39" should be later, you'd think anyway.

- put on ground lift
- hum is in headphone output also
- unplugged pc
.......Hum remains. It's kinda like a throbbing hum. Almost like flourescent lights are causing it. But I have none. I really like this amp for a solid state Vox. Bought it used for only $60 shipped. Nails the Vox sound pretty damn well. Really don't want to put much money into it. Saving up for an AC4TV.

Well now the fading is worse again, I am thinking now I should just scrap it for something new an ac-4 perhaps? I imagine I could get it repaired by an amp tech but it would probably end up costing the same as what I paid for it ($150). The local tech said it would be 50 bucks to look at it. No telling how much parts and labor would total.

I did some user testing for Paragon and here are a couple of not very good photos of the finished product here that I took.
<p>www.valvetronix.net/forums/leds-on-vfs5-t3247-70.html</p>
(please ignore my masking-tape labels)
The little switch on the back is to turn it off if it annoys you or when you're in manual mode as the LEDs don't make any sense in that mode.
It looks very professional and is pretty easy to install. You or a friend will need a little basic soldering skills and it involves drilling 5 holes in the casing which is pretty easy. Paragon's kit includes everything you need.

I've used it for rehearsals and practice and it really does make a difference knowing which patch you're on.

A good tube replacement is the Tung-Sol ECC803s/12ax7 Gold Pin. I replaced the stock EH tube with one of these....HUGE DIFFERENCE

I've had no real problems with volume problems with the VFS5. To my ears the cleans have more depth and crisper not sterile sounding anymore. Crunch seems fuller, dirtier. The higher gain channels have a little more mids, tighter bass, highs jump out, good note definition when you're doing fast runs. Overall it's more lively.

ERI,

The problem isn't your AC30, you, or the clean head room available from your AC30, the problem is your lead guitarist. He's simply playing to loud. The AC30 is a very LOUD amp, if you're having trouble being heard it's the other guy not you. However the suggestions Clay made are good and you should try them, but at the end of the day it's the other guitarist simply playing to loudly. In the end your band will sound better and your audience will be happier if you guys get this situation under control. To get the most clean head room from your AC30, simple turn the master up to full, the gain control should be around 25% and your guitar volume control should be below half. With these setting you should be have a very loud clean sound. Now without touching the amp simply turn up your guitars volume control. You should get great chrunchy distortion and most likely be as loud or louder than your other guitarist. Voxman's suggestion of a BBE is a great one. Being heard is not just about volume. It's about tone, a properly adjusted amp will cut through the mix without actually being the loudest sound source on stage.

Free things to try:
Step 1. Place your other guitarist's amp at his ear level. Or at least point it at his ears. He will hear himself better and likely turn down a smidge so he can hear the drums, etc.
Step 2. Point your amp away from the other guitarist, to allow him to hear himself. A 2nd guitar in the mix clutters self-hearing.
Step 3. Move the other guitarist away from the drummer to help him hear himself.
Step 4. Ask him, nicely, to turn down.
Step 5. Place your amp on a riser/chair/desk, to improve its projection.
Step 6. Make sure your Vox AC30cc has the warm/hot switch on HOT.
Step 7. Try turning your guitar's volume down. The less volume coming from the guitar, the cleaner your signal will be. You will need more master volume and treble on your Vox to compensate.

Not free:
1. Mic your amp, or
2. Buy another AC30cc and run them together, or
3. Use an extension/external speaker cabinet.

For those of you that have an NT and want to be able to switch on/off even more gain & bottom end, Retrobob at Valvetronix.net has just added a technical article with details of his NT mod.

Usual 'risk warnings': This is not an official Vox mod, it will likely invalidate your warranty, you use at your own risk - & read Retrobob's safety warnings re voltage and draining capacitors before working on the amp.
